Hiram Larew founded the informal Poetry X Hunger initiative in 2017 as a way to bring two areas of interest—poetry and hunger prevention—together. Upon retiring from the U.S. Department of Agriculture where he helped guide international agriculture programs, he noticed that relatively little poetry about hunger was available. Believing in the power of poetry to touch hearts and minds, he launched Poetry X Hunger as a way to encourage poets to write about hunger.

Your Other Life

You will outlive you

beyond all memory or lakes

in bunches of grapes

in every raking tune and brimming

You will be maybe.

You will outlive you again and again

as travelers know

as moss whispers Go

as rusted leaves blow

                 to truly.

In every bundle of rain

or trains in the hills

with every still that’s alive.

You will outlive you entirely

behind closing eyes

behind all the tries

and as wide loves all wides

You will become pies glowing.

From the poet:

This poem, which first appeared in Next Page Ink, was written with that sense of mortality that we all share. But also with an up-curl of gratitude at its end for all that has been offered and given.  And hey, don't we all consider pies some of our very best friends? I surely do!

About the audio recording:

UK musician, songwriter, and friend Warwick Jones graciously composed and plays the background music in the recording.
