Life Is Simple, We Make It Hard
By Brandon Alter:
I don’t think it was ever designed to be this complicated. The river was for swimming in and drinking from. It washed our clothes and our bodies. The fire was for warmth and protection. It cooked our food and mesmerized our hearts. The mountain was for gazing upon and wandering through. There was no need for meditation because life was a meditation. As soon as you fell out of step with the world around you, you felt it, and you corrected your way. We were happy, and we were together. Life was simple and pure and it was enough.
Life is still simple, we make it hard.
I don’t know where we are now. I don’t know where we are going. But I do know that it’s never too late to return. Strip away the complexity of our day to day and what are we left with? Song and breath. Water and sweet earth and unending fire. You have your body. You have your relationships. You have the earth and the sky. This is true abundance. When this doesn’t feel like enough, it’s because we have fallen out of step. And I think a lot of us, myself included, have been out of step for a long time. Course correction hurts, but ultimately it feels like homecoming.
